After sailing across the Gulf of Nicoya you have finally arrived at the Nicoya Peninsula, home of one of the blue zones in the world. First stop is the Curu Wildlife Refuge (https://curuwildliferefuge.com/). Many don't even realize this stunning beach and refuge is right along the way and pass by it missing their chance to see spider monkeys, deer, coati's, white-faced capuchins and so much wildlife naturally living within. As soon as you enter Curu Wildlife Refuge keep your eyes open for deer and monkeys as there are usually capuchins amongst the trees before you even reach the beach. Once a spider monkey was sitting at the front entrance!
There are many different walking trails throughout the refuge for all levels immersing you deep within nature as the trees tower over you with their grandeur. The beach is enclosed and surrounded by lush jungle mountains drowning in greenery, there isn't a hotel or condominium to be seen. You will have stepped into paradise as the trail opens to the bright blue waters of the gorgeous beach and is lined with palms and tropical trees, look closely for the colorful birds resting within the limbs.

Everything you touch lights up the water as the waters magically come alive. Paquera is one of the best spots to experience bioluminescence in Costa Rica at any time of the year. You can inquire with Curu Wildlife Refuge if they are running tours that evening and if not, they can easily be arranged through Eddys Bioluminescence Reservation Paquera (https://www.facebook.com/eddysbioluminescence) or Bahia Rica Fishing & Kayak Lodge (https://www.bahiarica.com/).
It is a truly amazing phenomenon as you kayak through the water and every stroke of your paddle illuminates the waters around you. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
